The application has been crafted to facilitate the connection of basic circuits of a metal detector to an iPhone through the phone’s headphone jack. The schematics for homemade metal detectors are notably straightforward, rendering it accessible for individuals regardless of their soldering experience. Metal detectors offer the capability to identify ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including valuable materials like gold and silver, with the added feature of discrimination. Positive numerical readings signify ferrous metals, whereas negative values indicate non-ferrous ones. Notably, the displayed numbers do not correspond to "Target ID" or VDI values commonly found on branded metal detectors.

The initial design, labeled "Very Simple" metal detector (MD1), presents one of the most simplistic yet operational schematics for a metal detector, primarily comprising an LC circuit along with two resistors, excluding the iPhone :). The central component of the device remains the LC circuit, where maintaining stability in its parameters is critical. Variations in temperature lead to constant fluctuations in its characteristics, requiring continuous fine-tuning through the application. Despite minor fluctuations in the internal iPhone circuitry and the headphone jack adapter, stabilization typically occurs within 2-3 minutes from signal activation, necessitating continuous functioning during use.

The frequency range spans from 3 to 14 kHz, permitting users to select the frequency by manipulating the capacitor's capacity within the LC circuit. Upon initializing a frequency change due to altered capacities or inductances or upon encountering temperature variations, recalibration for resonance frequency detection is essential.

Operating a metal detector demands vigilance due to potential hazards and complexities involved in its use. Thorough research on dedicated platforms is advised before engaging in metal-detecting activities. Conducting experimental trials with a coin placed on the ground is highly recommended.

The free versions of metal detectors come with restrictions primarily tied to sound signal thresholds and indicator light responses. While users can rely on numerical readings displayed in reduced font sizes on the iPhone screen for metal detection, auditory or peripheral visual cues are limited without direct screen observation.
